European Synergy
In March, SEMI concluded three key events that confirm some of my best hopes and expectations for the European high technology industry. At ISS Europe, leaders from every leading technology segment offered critical insights into European competitiveness and growth opportunities. Many speakers and attendees were confident of the continued contributions from research consortia such as IMEC and Fraunhofer and the promising successes of R&D projects like JESSI, MEDEA, MEDEA+, CATRENE and ENIAC... Attend SEMICON Europa Exhibitor Training on 26 May
What are the secrets to increasing your success at a tradeshow? How can you make a trade show a successful marketing and sales tool for your company? SEMI invites you to the SEMICON Europa Exhibitor Training Day on 26 May in Stuttgart.

ISA and SEMI Sign Memo of Understanding
Both SEMI and the India Semiconductor Association (ISA) promote and develop the semiconductor industries. In February, a memoranda of understanding was signed in Bangalore, India, outlining the cooperative agreement.

High Tech U under Consideration for Austrian Career Initiative
Why did the Austrian Minister of Research and Innovation (Christa Kranzl) attend a High Tech U event? Kranzl intends to launch programs in Austria to increase student interest in technology R&D—and now, SEMI HTU is one of the pilot programs under consideration.

SEMICON Europa 2008 Call for Papers
Deadline extended to 30 May!

Innovation is at Risk: Losses up to $4 Billion Annually due to IP Infringement
Semiconductor equipment and materials suppliers face serious and mounting challenges in intellectual property (IP) protection, with adverse economic consequences for the entire microelectronics industry, according to a new white paper published by SEMI.

A Glimpse into the Southeast Asian Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Market
by Edwin Hall, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics
The Southeast Asia region, especially Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, is most active in the area of assembly and test equipment—and it is the second largest market region for packaging materials.

"2007—What a Year!"
by Lara Chamness, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics
Was 2007 the best year ever for the semiconductor equipment and materials industry? Believe it. The lack of fanfare is probably due to the fact that this record year is the result of strength in both the equipment and materials markets.

Displays Enable New Applications and Spur Eco-Friendly Manufacturing
by Craig Addison, SEMI
Flat panel displays are no longer just displays—they are enablers for new and different technology applications, according to Hsuan-bin Chen of AU Optronics.

Spansion Exec Sees Beyond "Profitless Prosperity"
Ajit Manocha of Spansion envisions an era of "heterogeneous alliances" delivering innovative business models and improved returns for semiconductor device makers. At SBC 2008, he talked about strategic alliances across the semiconductor value chain as the emergent solution to today's profitability crisis.

Celebrating 35 Years of SEMI Standards
Every tool in every semiconductor fab in the world conforms to SEMI Standards. Over 1,700 committee volunteers work in the Standards Program—representing more than 880 companies and organizations in 36 countries. Congratulations on 35 years of SEMI Standards.

Intel Shares Vision on Manufacturing Strategy and 450 mm
Robert Bruck of Intel gave attendees at SBC 2008 detailed insights on the company's architecture and manufacturing strategies, including plans for "unprecedented collaboration" with suppliers on the evaluation of a 450 mm wafer transition.

Quick Poll: What is the most effective way to increase intellectual property (IP) protection on a global basis?
Bring publicity and exposure to unacceptable
IP practices and policies.
Through diplomacy and international relations,
improve legal remedies for clear violations.
Educate markets and potential violators on
IP issues that threaten innovation.
Increase the use of company Best Practices
in developing and managing IP.

Solar/PV Sector Can Speed Growth—with Lessons Learned in the FPD Industry
by Craig Addison, SEMI
Lessons learned in the FPD manufacturing industry can accelerate progress in the solar/PV industry, according to speakers at the SEMI Global FPD Partners conference held in Miyazaki, Japan, from April 9-11.

Did the Equipment and Materials Industry Empower the Silicon Revolution?
Did our industry empower the Silicon Revolution? Why did technology in Silicon Valley flourish? What are the big differentiators and drivers going forward? A joint SEMI/ Chemical Heritage Foundation conference held April 1-2 at the Computer History Museum in Mt. View, California discussed all this and more.

The Era of Semiconductor Materials Has Arrived
"Semiconductor material is the foundation of the IC industry and the development of material technology makes IC technology upgrading possible," remarked Cao Jianlin of the Ministry of Science and Technology at the first China Semiconductor Materials International Conference (CSMIC).

Company Executives Lobby during the 2008 Washington Forum
On April 15-16, SEMI hosted the 2008 Washington Forum. Over 20 industry executives travelled to Washington to participate in more than 30 meetings with Congress, the Administration, and staff of the presidential candidates.
