From the SEMI® Europe President

Heinz Kundert, President, SEMI EuropeSEMI Seeks RoHS Exclusion for Semiconductor and PV Manufacturing Equipment

Europe's RoHS legislation restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Semiconductor and photovoltaic manufacturing equipment (SPME) are currently excluded from the scope of RoHS under the large-scale stationary industrial tool (LSIT) exclusion.

However, in October 2009, a draft proposal on the ROHS recast by the committee responsible of the EU Parliament was published. This proposal would eliminate the LSIT exclusion that covered SPME.

Losing the RoHS exclusion for semiconductor and PV manufacturing equipment is a very serious issue. Including SPME under RoHS will hinder the growth of the European semiconductor and PV industries, negatively impacting businesses and European leadership in green technology development... (more)

SEMI Europe Members Speak Out
By Heinz Kundert, president, SEMI Europe
What is the future of European semiconductor manufacturing and the proper role of SEMI and PV Group in the industry? SEMI executives conducted face-to-face interviews with CEOs and other senior executives from member companies to find out.

Productivity Transfer Propels Further Growth of China Packaging Industry
By Bin Chou, SEMI Shanghai China
There has been strong growth of China's semiconductor assembly industry over the past several years as foreign semiconductor companies increase their manufacturing presence in China. This trend will continue as the intense pressure to reduce costs drives advanced packaging production to China.

Unique Format of PV Fab Managers Forum Offers Opportunity to Collaborate
For the first time, the photovoltaic (PV) market has reached a point of saturation where supply exceeded demand despite the fact that falling silicon prices, higher cell efficiency and productivity were stimulating the market. However, itís only a matter of time until the second wave of strong demand will come.

PV Group Advances Solar Policy Best Practices at Congressional Briefing, International Webcast
In support of the PV Group's policy position on feed-in tariffs (FIT), the PV Group recently took part in a renewable energy policy briefing on Capitol Hill and organized an online webcast on FIT Best Practices with leading policy experts around the world.

Printed Electronics Executives Discuss Predictions for Massive Development in 2010
Over 200 of the leading companies in the emerging Printed Electronics (PE) industry will gather at the Printed Electronics Summit taking place May 10-11 in San Diego, California. Tim Lovatt from PE Futures interviewed some of the conference's presenters.

Can Government Help High Tech and Spur Economic Growth?
As governments around the world try to create the next great boon in economic growth, we wondered, "Do these efforts really help and what specifically can governments do to boost entrepreneurial activity in the private sector?" SEMI interviewed Josh Lerner, the author of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," about some key issues.

2010 ISS-US Blue Chip Panel: A "Perfect Storm"
By Scott Landstrom, SCI Consulting
On January 12 at the annual SEMI Industry Strategy Symposium (ISS-US), the Executive Panel session focused on "The Structural Evolution of the Semiconductor Equipment Industry." Panelists were from: Applied Materials, KLA-Tencor, Lam Research, Mattson Technology, Novellus Systems, and Teradyne.

SEMI Export Control Proposals Approved Globally
The export control requirements for etch equipment and cluster tools will be reduced as a result of SEMI's public policy work. Each year SEMI works closely with member companies to push for improvements to the export control list maintained by the multilateral Wassenaar Arrangement as part of their annual list review.
