The Semiconductor Industry Recovery: Spending and Investments in North America
By Daniel Tracy, SEMI Industry Research & Statistics
What a difference a year makes for the semiconductor industry! Following the strong rebound in the second half of 2009, most analysts and industry watchers are forecasting 15-20% growth in semiconductor sales for 2010. This would result in a record year for revenues and unit sales.

The Silicon Reclaim Wafer Market: Modest Revenue Recovery through 2011
By Lara Chamness, SEMI Industry Research & Statistics
Reclaim wafer suppliers faced many challenges in 2009. Between idled fab tools due to low fab utilization and intense cost reduction efforts within fabs, fab operators' need for test (virgin or reclaimed) wafers diminished significantly in the first half of 2009.

Bringing Big Manufacturing Improvements to the HB LED Business
By Paula Doe, SEMI Emerging Markets
SSL cost per lumen will come down drastically in the next few years. Driven by the growing market opportunity and by U.S. DOE funding, semiconductor equipment makers and their device-maker partners are at work on a series of projects that each aim at major 30-50% improvements in basic cycle time, yield, and cost.

Technology Roadmaps and Industry Standards: A Path Towards Grid Parity
By Bettina Weiss, SEMI PV Group
Technology developments in cell efficiency and increases in manufacturing economies of scale will not be enough to reach grid parity goals as fast as the world desires. A faster learning curve for the solar PV industry could be accomplished through better industry collaboration, including industry standards and technology roadmaps.

It's Back to Business at SEMICON West
SEMICON West is the best opportunity to reconnect and get back to business after the downturn. Events include the IEEE/SEMI ASMC, two new TechSITE stages, TechXPOTs, and Extreme Electronics stages. SEMI has expanded its partnerships with other organizations to bring events under the SEMICON West roof: ITRS, IMAPS, and IEEE ATEVision 2020.

No More "Fear Factor": Understanding MEMS Fabrication
By Monica L. Takacs, MEMS Industry Group
In the past, the 'fear factor' of MEMS' complex fabrication processes restricted the widespread adoption of MEMS in many markets. Today, however, MEMS' fabrication is keeping pace with market demand for mass-produced MEMS devices which are being fabricated in the millions.

Energy Storage Fully Charged to Drive a $44 Billion Market
By Lux Research
The momentum behind emerging power storage technologies will drive a 15.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2015, says Lux Research. The market for batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells targeting transportation and smart grid applications will more than double from $21.4 billion in 2010 to $44.4 billion in 2015.

U.S. Government Announces Major Export Control Reform Initiative
On April 20, Defense Secretary Gates presented the Administration's sweeping proposal for reforming U.S. export controls. Last fall, President Obama announced a review of the dual-use and munitions control systems; Gates' speech represents the first concrete recommendations. The goal is to double U.S. exports over the next five years.

SEMICON Japan: New LED Area; New Partnership
The LED industry is experiencing rapid expansion and substantial investment by LED-related equipment and material suppliers globally. LED expansion and new facility projects are starting up over the world. The high-brightness LED (HB-LED) market will see more than 50% growth this year, to reach $8.2 billion in revenues. SEMICON Japan expands its offerings.

A Year of Progress for CAST
The economic crisis and the industry's quest for lower "cost of test" created a stronger push for more collaboration in the semiconductor test industry. In 2008, the STC initiated the effort to form the new global Collaborative Alliance for Semiconductor Test.
