The Foundry Answer to Technology, Cost, and Moore Scaling
Bryan J. Rice, Ph.D.
For nearly 50 years, Moore's law scaling has been the crucible for semiconductor technology advancement. But gone are the days when the industry can predictably deliver the triumvirate of higher performance, lower power consumption, and reduced cost with each successive technology node. This economic reality has spawned a foundry/fabless ecosystem driven by the counterbalancing forces of delivering sustained profitability while satisfying the demands of seemingly insatiable consumers. Choosing a technology strategy for leading edge process R&D requires maintaining that balance. This presentation will discuss the role of innovation, partnership, customer requirements, and technology costs in creating foundry strategy.
