There are two types of epitaxial or epi silicon wafers used in the semiconductor industry: discrete and MOS. MOS epi wafers offer the advantage of obtaining a lightly doped material on top of a heavily doped substrate. The result is the heavily doped element serves as an electrical ground, conducting stray currents away from the device active regions near the surface. Further, the epi layer itself maintains exceptionally high purity.
