Countdown for SEMICON Europa and Plastic Electronics 2013

EU10/100/20 Strategy Investment Wave — Access and Opportunity at SEMICON Europa

BERLIN, Germany — 7 October 2013 –SEMICON Europa 2013 will open its doors on 8 October at the Messe Dresden. More than 300 exhibitors from 20 nations will present new products and technologies at the premier exhibition and conference event for the European semiconductor industry.  Leaders of the semiconductor, MEMS and other microelectronics industries all convene at SEMICON Europa (www.semiconeuropa.org) to plan the next steps in Europe’s ambitious new €100 billion semiconductor manufacturing strategy. The goal is Europe holding 20 percent of the global chip production market by 2020.

SEMICON Europa will be the next stop to discuss how to translate this European vision into a strategy and concrete actions. Investment is already underway: five projects or “pilot lines” were launched in May this year involving 128 partners from across the supply chain and worth over € 700 million in EU, national and industry funding. In July 2013, the French government launched Nano2017, a five-year public/private strategic investment program worth € 3,5 billion addresses three technologies: FD-SOI for low-power, high-performance processing, next-generation imaging (sensors and image signal processors), and embedded non-volatile memories. Also in July, a new European funding instrument for nanoelectronics was announced, ECSEL, with a total budget of € 4,8 billion. Momentum is building both among both industry players and public authorities, so now is the time to set out an action plan for semiconductor manufacturing in Europe, as was done in other manufacturing regions.

According to the SEMI World Fab Forecast, semiconductor equipment spending will double in Europe in 2014, from US$ 2.4 billion to over $5 billion. SEMICON Europa  serves as the next step in information, engagement and opportunity for this major investment in long-term manufacturing competiveness in Europe.  The event features programs led by industry experts on each of the major projects, including 450mm wafer processing, power electronics, MEMS, and FDSOI. Over 40 programs with speakers from nearly 40 leading European fabs will provide the latest trends, technologies, and processes in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, including test, advanced packaging and 3D-IC, lithography, metrology and more.

In the two-day program, “450mm: Towards a Global Cooperation,” leaders from the Global 450 Consortium (G450C), EC and other public-funded projects, and leading suppliers will present and discuss the path to participate in the future of the semiconductor manufacturing. SEMICON Europa will also feature the 17th annual Fab Manager Forum on 7-8 October, the leading information and networking platform for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. The Executive Summit on 8 October will provide attendee insights into EU investment priorities and program participation. At the SEMI International MEMS/MST Industry Forum, “Taking MEMS to the Next Level,” leaders from all sectors of the MEMS value chain will address the critical issues enabling and challenging industry growth prospects for the coming 3-5 year period.

SEMICON Europa will again co-locate with the 2013 Plastics Electronics Conference and Exposition (www.plastic-electronics.org), Europe’s premier event focusing on the latest developments in printed, organic and large area electronics.  The combination of the two events offers visitors as well as exhibitors great synergies and opportunities. No other event combines the two disciplines under one roof like this event.

SEMICON Europa 2013 is the largest annual industry event in Europe for technologies and solutions for the manufacturers of advanced microelectronics, including semiconductors, MEMS, printed and organic electronics and photovoltaics, power electronics and other new and related electronics markets. The event is not only the leading trade fair of the European semiconductor industry but also the industry's trend indicator for technological trends and cutting-edge developments. During the three days of the trade fair, more than 8,000 visitors from all over the world are expected.
