General Semiconductor FAQ

Semiconductor manufacturing is the process of creating very small electronic circuits which are the backbone of all modern electronic products, such as computers and mobile phones.  Manufacturing semiconductors is done in a fabrication facility (fab), specificallly in an ultra-clean setting. It's a compex, global business with annual sales of ~US $600B.

You can learn about semiconductors by searching the internet, for example, Wikipedia and by visiting YouTube. Both 2 year and 4 year colleges offer curriculum focused on semiconductor manufacturing. More information is available from the SEMI Foundation and online courses are available including those from SEMI U.

For entry-level equipment operator and technician employment a high school degree is needed. Prior training as a maintenance or repair technician or in a factory floor setting would be a good background. A two-year college degree in an industrial field would be considered an asset.

For professional positions in marketing, sales or finance, a college degree is required and an advanced degree, e.g., MBA, is preferred. Prior experience in technology companies would be valuable.

For professional positions in engineering, manufacturing or research, a STEM degree (e.g., electrical engineering, chemical engineering, physics) is required and advanced degrees up to and including the PhD level are are preferred.
