In 2018, SEMI shared a statement reflecting the common view of key industry associations with the European Commission and Oeko-Institut & Fraunhofer IZM contributing to a study that supports the review of the list of restricted substances and assesses a new exemption request under RoHS 2 (Pack 15).

Last month the European Commission (EC) approved €1.75 billion in public support from France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom (UK) to fund the joint European microelectronics project, which brings together businesses across Europe to spur innovation in IoT and connected car technologies.

Following the 2008 financial crisis, millions of manufacturing jobs were lost in Europe, each time bringing dramatic human/social consequences. Employment levels and jobs are vulnerable to worrying international trends, including increasing protectionism.

SEMI recently shared industry feedback with the European Commission on the roadmap for reviewing RoHS (the Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment). With the rise of AI, governments worldwide are accelerating the implementation of data economy and regulations to protect sensitive data traversing AI networks. The European Commission is making progress with initiatives aimed at improving the efficient use of data across the EU.

Since its inception in 2002, the RoHS Directive has become a global reference point for regulation of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). This has been effective and given the EU a competitive advantage.
