World Fab Forecast Report (2022 to 2024). Published March 15, 2023.

Report Update:

  • The report lists a total of 1470 facilities/lines including more than 140 future facilities/lines with various probabilities that will start volume production in 2023 or later.
  • The report is tracking active investments (combination of construction and equipment) in the report time frame of 2022 to 2024 of 645 facilities and lines.
  • Since the last publication in December 2022, we made 464 changes to 396 fabs/lines. We added 15 new fabs/lines and deleted 12 fabs/lines.

Fab Equipment Investments:

  • Fab equipment spending shows a market downturn with nearly US$76 B or -22% YoY.
  • We expect 2024 will recover to $ 92 B (21% YoY), but still lower than the record level of 2022.

Capacity:

  • Capacity for Memory is flat in 2023 but back to increase with 3% in 2024.
  • Total Foundry capacity (including Foundry/IDM) shows 9% in 2023 and 7% in 2024.

New Fabs/Construction:

  • Driven by new fab projects, investments into construction projects are going through the roofs, reaching historic highs in 2023 and expected to continue to growth in 2024
  • There are 29 new fab construction projects (greenfields) with high probability for volume fabs in 2023 (not including R&Ds and pilots) .
  • There are currently 6 known new construction projects (greenfields) of volume fab in 2024 (not including R&Ds and pilots).
