How Can the Semiconductor Industry Develop the Low-Carbon Energy Sources It Needs to Lower Its Emissions Footprint?

The semiconductor value chain is a disproportionate consumer of energy in almost all key Asian markets, and the commitments made by the energy sector and governments to increase low-carbon energy for consumers are not enough. Due to the complexity of financing, regulatory policy and legacy infrastructure, market players are not aligned in their low-carbon energy efforts. Read the analysis here.

Traditionally, companies have used a one-to-one approach with energy financiers, regulators, and other ecosystem members. SEMI and the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC) are partnering with McKinsey & Company to create the SCC Energy Collaborative, to unlock roadblocks around installation of low-carbon energy in multiple regions in Asia. Separately, the SCC-EC will present the voice of the collective to regulators and provide a consolidated supply statement to energy financiers, hence assuring a multilateral secure ecosystem to enable access to low-carbon energy.

Some of the key deliverables of SCC-Energy Collaborative include:

  • Bottoms-up mapping of supply and demand for 24/7 low-carbon energy analysis
  • Detailed analysis for six priority Asian markets as prioritized by the members
  • Detail developers’ challenges customized by region and cost trajectory of low-carbon energy technologies in prioritized markets
  • Creation of a detailed roadmap for prioritized unlocks, initiatives, milestones, stakeholders, and supporting actions from SCC and its members

SEMI is seeking individual company commitments for this 2-year project. Sponsoring companies will actively guide the effort (through the SCC-EC Steering Committee), deeply engage with providers and other key stakeholders in roundtables and fact-finding sessions and receive access to McKinsey’s expert analysis. They will also get to weigh in and shape the roadmap accelerating the journey to decarbonization of energy sources. Key manufacturers with strong presence in Asia have committed or expressed strong interest in actively supporting this effort.

Companies that share in the concern with the lack of low-carbon energy plans and actions in the APAC region should seriously consider sponsorship of the SCC Energy Collaborative. Sharing resources to start this foundational semiconductor industry sustainability work underway now is vital to having access to low-carbon energy in 5-10 years.

Join this journey towards decarbonizing energy sources in Asia and sponsor the SCC-EC by November 14.
