What’s a sextillion? It’s the number one followed by 21 zeros — outnumbering the stars in the Milky Way. Industry analyst Jim Handy estimates that 13 sextillion transistors have been manufactured by the chip industry since the first one sprang to life in late 1947. 

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is working to build awareness of semiconductor career paths in the state. The aim: grow Michigan’s semiconductor industry by as many as 30,000 semiconductor jobs by 2030.

At the SEMICON West 2023 Workforce Development pavilion, presenters and panelists from industry and academia offered students, recent graduates, veterans, and professionals re-entering the workforce or looking to change jobs with perspectives about how to land a job in the semiconductor sector.

To adapt to changing chip industry talent demands, it’s important to improve workforce cultures for the LGBT+ community of today and tomorrow and create an industry-wide shift to attract the most brilliant minds in the field.

Since last year’s adoption of the CHIPS and Science Act, aimed at bringing chip manufacturing back to the U.S. shores, global semiconductor companies have announced a plethora a new U.S. greenfield fab builds worth billions of dollars.

The tech industry is currently undergoing a cultural transformation, driven by the growing recognition of the importance of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) in the workplace. Companies are increasingly being held accountable for their actions.

More than 2 years after the start of the pandemic, the US unemployment rate has dropped dramatically to 3.5% in July 2022, the lowest since February 2020. However, the participation rate has not recovered in one important segment of the workforce: women – particularly women in professional careers.
